How I did & You too Can do 108 Surya Namaskar? 

On the eve of 5th International Yoga Day, I am writing about How I practiced completing 108 Surya Namaskar.

On 16th June I along with another 847 participants completed 108 Surya Namaskar. It was an exciting experience. It is heartening to note that out of the total 848 participants 95% were women. This shows women are now taking fitness seriously. If you are a woman and not doing anything effective for your fitness, I think you have misplaced priorities in life.

Today I am writing about my practice schedule. How I achieved 108 and how you too can achieve this feat.

How I Did it?

I am a fitness trainer, I regularly do Gym Training (Weight Training), Yoga, Aerobics, including Surya Namaskar.

With the regular exercise regime, I started with 15 Surya Namaskar on 6th May 2019, about 40 days before the event.

  • Every day I added 2 till I achieved 50 in 8.29 min
  • Thereafter I did on alternate days and added 5
  • I achieved 108 on 7th June in 21.08 min.
  • In the last week after 7th June, I did 108 on 3 days.

I could do 108 without a break.

In the event, we had to complete 108 in 45 minutes with 5 scheduled breaks after about 20 Surya Namaskar. We could complete in 42 minutes.

How Can You Achieve this?

Those are not regular about the exercise, not suffering from another back, legs or heart-related disease can start slow:

  • Wear loose clothes.
  • First, do body warm-up. Move your limbs and stretch your body.
  • Do it Yoga mat in a clean and spacious place.
  • You can play music of your choice to make it interesting.
  • Start with 5 Surya Namaskar daily at least 3 to 4 months in advance.
  • Gradually increase the count.
  • Take a break of about 1 to 2 minutes if you need to after every 10 Surya Namaskar.
  • You also can sip water.
  • Do not forget to do body stretching at the end.

Know your body. Stop if you are not comfortable. Stop if your back or legs pain. Know the severity, consult your doctor if necessary or reduce the speed and continue.

Remember if you have not done Surya Namaskar before, you need to learn from a good trainer.

Those who are doing a regular exercise can start as per my schedule. The key is not speeding to complete but endurance to complete 108. It may take a longer time but it is okay as long as you are progressing daily.

Surya Namaskar is overall fitness exercise. It is good for heart, flexibility, toning of muscles.

This event on 16th June is going to find a place in the Limca Book of Records. The next similar event is in December 2019.
