The Founder’s Dilemma at 65:
I met a founder recently. 65 years old. Steady, thoughtful, and carrying a responsibility much larger than himself.
His situation was complex:
– His elder son didn’t want to join the business
– His younger brother, who once shared the load, had passed away
– His nephew was still young and unsure of his future
– And the entire business and family depended on him
As we spoke, he paused and said softly: “I just don’t want to leave everyone unprepared.”
There was no drama in his voice. Just honesty… and a truth many founders live with silently.
When the next generation isn’t ready or willing, succession becomes less about heirs and more about responsibility. About financial stability, and wanting the family to be safe even when life takes unexpected turns.
I share this because I see this story often. Different families, different industries… yet the same uneasiness beneath the surface.
If you’ve ever felt something similar, even quietly, you’re not alone.
Keeping these thoughts to yourself often aggravates the very concerns you’re trying to avoid.
Even discussing them can open up options you may not have considered.
Happy to discuss this anytime. Sometimes, simply organising the thoughts is the real beginning.
