Your Well-being Matters & It’s An Urgent Need Than You Think

“If you look at healthcare today, it’s all about disease. It’s not about understanding wellness at all.” Leroy Hood

You have all material wealth and luxuries; you are fit but yet do you feel happy? Many rich people and celebrities are falling under this category. But this feeling of lowness and unhappiness is not limited to rich and famous, it is across society.

Depression and anxiety are the widespread afflictions in the material and fast-paced society. You may be going to the gym and doing regular exercise but that is not enough for your fitness. Your fitness is a matter of your body, mind, and something more.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as being “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Wellbeing is an intangible aspect of happiness that we can only feel. It is not a disease-free life but happiness induced life. You are not just disease-free but you are energetic, happy, live with a positive attitude and vibrant energy.

“For me, fitness is not just about hitting the gym; it is also about inner happiness and overall well-being.” Rakul Preet Singh

There are six components of overall wellbeing we should strive to achieve.

Physical Fitness

  1. Physically Fitness

This is about adequate exercise and the right diet. Physical fitness is vital and necessary. Without this, all other possessions in life lose their charm. The body is the place we live from birth until death.  Keeping it in the proper working condition is our duty.

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” John F. Kennedy

This is the first of the six components of wellbeing.

  1. Mental Fitness

This is an epidemic.

An estimated 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. The World Health Organization has predicted that by 2020, depression will be the second-leading cause of disease burden globally.[1] Depression is set to outpace ischemic heart disease as the number one cause of disease burden worldwide by 2030.[2]

Most of us are hollow from inside. All material luxuries and relationships do not make us happy.

“Mental health…is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going.” Noam Shpancer, PhD

Mental health has two components. An active mind and a balanced mind. You need to work on both aspects.

An active mind needs mental exercise and engaging activities.

A balanced mind needs accepting the realities of life with composure, spiritual inclination, and the ability to accept others’ points of view. Reading good books and biographies of successful and great people could be of great help.

You should be considerate about other’s feelings and empathetic about it. You should be able to listen to others’ views. You should know how to behave in a social environment.

Spiritual Fitness

  1. Spiritually Fitness

“Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak.” Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati.

You are a soul, not the body, this fact every religion accepts. If that is the case, what do you do to keep you fit and fine? Unless your soul i.e. the content is fit, it won’t make the container fit.  Spiritual fitness is knowing, understanding, and accepting the laws governing our soul. These laws are the laws of karma.

It is also about doing things for others which makes us happy. Why many people do social work and derive happiness out of it? This is about spiritual fitness. Internal peace, satisfaction, empathy, knowing the self-different from the body all, and accepting whatever happens with calmness all these are the ingredient of spiritual fitness.

“A balanced inner calmness radiates from a peaceful centre. It neither craves others’ approval nor rejects others’ presence. It neither pulls towards nor pushes away. It has a reverent attitude towards life and all its inhabitants.” Donna Goddard, The Love of Devotion
