Thepla & Kacha Kela (Raw Banana) Vegetable for Dinner

Open the Tiffin box any Gujarati tourist and you will invariably find Thepla. Thepla is so universal that we can eat it Ghee, Tea, Curd, Vegetable or alone.  This is the power of popular Thepla.

Here we present a recipe of Thepla and Raw Banana Vegetable.

Thepla

Number of Thepla: 10-12

Preparation time: 75 minutes (Incl 60 minutes of waiting)

Making Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ bowl Wheat Flour
  • ½ bowl Fenugreek (Methi) Leaves, washed and finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoon Sour curd
  • 3 tablespoon Oil
  • ½ teaspoon Green chili paste
  • ¼ teaspoon Tal (Sesame) Seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • Pinch of Hing (Asafoetida) Powder
  • Salt as per taste
  • Water for dough

Process:

  • Mix all the ingredients except water in a big cooking vessel
  • Mix them all properly
  • Taste the mixture and add salt /chili to suit your taste
  • Then add little water and knead properly to make a dough
  • Make a soft dough and keep for an hour
  • Then make small balls of the dough
  • Take one ball, rub in dry wheat flour and make a round of 5/6 inches with a rolling pin.
  • Keep the tava on the gas stove, start a slow flame
  • Place the raw round Thepla on the Tava
  • After a few seconds, flip the side and apply oil, with fast flame.
  • Then flip again after a few seconds and apply oil on the other side
  • Flip the Thepla a couple more times until golden spots start to appear on each side and it is cooked evenly.

Gujaratis’ eat Thepla with Tea, Chhundo (Kind of Mango Pickle), Ghee, Jam and even without anything. They eat Thepla as breakfast and as dinner along with one Vegetable.

Raw Banana Vegetable: (Kachche Kele ki Sabzi)

Many Jains do not eat root vegetables and therefore they do not eat potato vegetable with Thepla. They have an interesting alternative in the form of Raw Banana Vegetable i.e. kachche Kele ki Sabzi.

 Ingredients:

Process:

  • Peel the bananas and cut it small pieces
  • In a small pressure cooker, put oil, rai, jeera, hing, curry leaves and start the gas start on a slow flame
  • Then add banana pieces, green peas, and tomatoes.
  • Add turmeric, red chili powder, salt
  • Close the pressure cooker and speed up the gas stove
  • After 2 whistles close the gas stove and cool it for 15 minutes
  • The vegetable is ready to serve. Serve with corridor garnishing.

Kacha Kela nu Shak

Best with Thepla but good with Roti and Paratha too.
